Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Our doctors can effectively treat your enlarged prostate (BPH) and let you get a good night's sleep again!

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the most common health problems in men. Starting around age 35, a prostate starts to enlarge, for reasons that we still do not understand. As the prostate grows, it puts pressure on the urethra (the tube inside the penis) and prevents your bladder from emptying completely. This results in a gradual build up of urinating problems that include:

  • Frequent urination
  • Nighttime urination
  • A slow stream
  • Dripping or dribbling of urine
  • Incomplete bladder emptying
  • The need to urinate quickly and suddenly
  • Needing to wait several seconds before urine starts to come out.

More advanced complications include urine infections, bladder stones, bladder hernias and kidney disease. Without early treatment, it can lead to permanent bladder control problems and urine leakage (incontinence) later in life.

Several treatments are available. In the past, treatment was with surgery and some patients still have this today. Medication can help in some cases, although the effects are usually temporary because the prostate continues to grow. Medications often do not improve your symptoms significant.

Newer treatments include microwave and radiofrequency wave therapy to treat the prostate. These remarkable devices gently heat the prostate and cause it to shrink. This takes approximately 30 minutes and results in improved urination in almost everyone. It is painless and bloodless, at least twice as effective as medication, and you can be back to normal activities the next day!

What is Cooled ThermoTherapy?

Prior to 1993, surgery was the therapeutic solution available for men with BPH. This surgical procedure is called a TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate), where the inner portion of the prostate is removed. TURP surgery has a higher incidence of complications including, erectile dysfunction (Ed), ejaculation problems and urinary incontinence. Today, many men use BPH medication to treat their symptoms. But there is another effective minimally invasive therapy. Cooled ThermoTherapy is one of the leading minimally invasive procedures for BPH and our doctors are one of the most experienced urologist in the United States in thermotherapy.

Cooled ThermoTherapy is performed at South Florida Urology Center, Inc in one our procedure rooms. The procedure takes 30 minutes.

Cooled ThermoTherapy delivers precisely targeted energy to destroy enlarged prostate tissue. The cooling mechanism protects the healthy surrounding urethral tissue. The concentrated energy is effective in destroy enlarged prostate tissue and provides long-lasting reduction in BPH symptoms. Cooled ThermoTherapy is covered by Medicare and most major health insurers.
